COURSE DESCRIPTION:

An interval class that combines Latin/international rhythms with dance and aerobic moves for a fun cardiovascular workout.  This class encourages fitness and wellness.  The general objective of this course is to increase each participant’s fitness level and knowledge about wellness.  

A successful student will:

  1.  Demonstrate an understanding of cardiovascular conditioning principles.

  1.  Demonstrate the application of the correct concepts involving warm-up and cool-down.

  1.  Develop and implement an individual exercise program that fits the need, health, and lifestyle of the participant.

  1.  Demonstrate understanding and application of the concept of perceived body exertion.

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge of how to select proper equipment needed for participation in an exercise routine.

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge of how to recognize and treat injuries that can occur from exercising.

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge and application of basic Zumba routines and rhythms.

  1.  Demonstrate knowledge and application of concepts to implement a lifelong wellness program.

LOCKER ROOM

1.   Lockers are checked out at the recreation desk.
2.   Use your own lock.
3.   Do not leave any valuables in unlocked lockers.  Do not assume locked lockers are safe.
4.   Salt Lake Community College is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.
5.   Bring your own towel for showering.
6.   Please help us keep the locker room clean.
7.  Locks and personal articles must be removed at the end of the semester.  Any lock left on will be cut off.



COURSE REQUIREMENTS:


1.   Attend and actively participate in class.
*  Make-up for absences will not be allowed.

*  Classes missed due to late registration will be counted as absences.

*  If you choose not to attend, you accept the responsibility for what occurs during your absence.

2.   Warm-up and cool-down for each workout session.  Because of safety reasons, students will not be allowed to participate in class if they are later than 10 minutes into the beginning of class time.  It is important that students cool-down after an aerobic workout.  If you arrive late or leave class early, you will lose participation points.

3.  Sign the class roll each time you attend class. If you sign in and leave or sign in for someone who is not there – you will be FAILED for the entire semester.

4.   Participate in fitness testing (pre and post test).

5. Complete assignments and worksheets as given by the instructor.  Assignments and worksheets must be handed in on time to receive full credit.

6. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for workouts.  Students who fail to dress appropriately and participate in class will lose participation points.
7.  Please do not leave class without notifying the instructor.  Notify the instructor immediately in the event of any injury, or change in health status which occurs before, during, or after class.  Make safety an important part of your learning experience.
8.   Sign a participation waiver at the beginning of the semester.  These will be due no later than Wednesday, September 5th.

9.   Practice mutual respect and cooperation.

GENERAL EDUCATION STATEMENT

This course fulfills the Lifelong Wellness requirement for the General Education Program at Salt Lake Community College.  It is designed not only to teach the information and skills required by the discipline, but also to develop vital workplace skills and to teach strategies and skills that can be used for life-long learning.  General Education courses teach basic skills as well as broaden a student’s knowledge of a wide range of subjects.  Education is much more than the acquisition of facts; it is being able to use information in meaningful ways in order to enrich one’s life.  While the subject of each course is important and useful, we become truly educated through making connections of such varied information with the different methods of organizing human experience that are practiced by different disciplines.

Therefore, this course, when combined with other General Education courses, will enable you to develop broader perspectives and deeper understandings of your community and the world, as well as challenge previously held assumptions about the world and its inhabitants.

As a student in this General Education course for Lifelong Wellness, you will be required to post your Lifelong Wellness Application Paper on your ePortfolio website for this course.  This assignment which includes answering the questions and posting it online will be worth at least 10% of you grade.

A student cannot receive credit for this assignment unless the teacher receives a copy of the Lifelong Wellness Application Paper along with a link or Print-Screen of where you uploaded it to your ePortfolio website.

INCOMPLETES:

An incomplete is a conditional grade given only in extraordinary cases where a student has completed a major portion of the class but is unable to complete course work due to circumstances beyond their control such as a major illness/injury or a death in the family.  Written documentation from your physician is required.
